It seems that linking one account to different phones is not far off.

WhatsApp now supports one account on several devices, but only one of them can be a smartphone. It looks like this rule will change soon: in the beta version of the messenger on Android, they discovered the ability to synchronize chat history between several smartphones.
This feature is likely related to the previously seen companion mode — so in beta is the connection of an additional smartphone to an existing account. In this mode, the data of the previously used account will be erased from the additional smartphone, so there is no talk of quickly switching between two accounts.
It is not yet known when WhatsApp will support multiple smartphones – and whether the function will be available on iPhone. So far, it is only available to some users of the Android version of WhatsApp 2.22.15.13.
