Unknown USB accessories will be blocked in macOS

On June 6, Apple introduced new versions of its operating systems, which traditionally received many improvements, including in terms of security. We have already talked about some of the non-obvious innovations in iOS 16, and now information has appeared on the Web about the new feature of macOS 13 Ventura.

After updating the OS, new USB-C accessories will be automatically blocked and will not be able to interact with the operating system, until the user authorizes their use. It looks like the change will only affect Macs with M1 and M2 processors.

The new feature will work in the same way as Accessory Lock for locked iPhones and iPads, which appeared in iOS 12. You can turn it off if you wish in the “Security” section of the system settings. By default, it will be set to “Ask for new accessories”

It is noted that the blocking will not apply to adapters, external monitors and hubs that comply with Apple standards, and charging will continue even if you have not consented to use the accessory . In other words, it seems that we are talking only about blocking data transfer.

Moreover, the system will “remember” all the accessories that you used before the system update, and will not require you to grant permission to each of them.
