Now on Android smartphones, WhatsApp backups of any size can be stored on Google Drive – chats with thousands of videos, gifs, photos. But the authors of WABetaInfo found changes in the policy for working with backups in the build of the beta version of the messenger.

In 2018, Google and WhatsApp entered into an agreement. Within it, the size of the messenger backup is not taken into account when calculating the Google Drive quota, even if the user has a free account with 15 GB of space.

After limits are introduced backups can take up a significant amount of space on Google Drive. If a user uses up almost all available cloud space, Google will send a notification and offer a paid Google One subscription to increase the quota.

You can continue to use the services for free if you remove bulky videos and other files from WhatsApp chats. The alternative is to save backups locally on your smartphone's memory, or start a new Google mail and link it to WhatsApp to take advantage of another 15 GB of free space in the cloud.

By the way, Apple does not provide unlimited backup storage options copies of WhatsApp in iCloud. Perhaps in the future the company will reconsider this decision.
